This year Paraná plants an area of ​​1.39 million hectares of wheat, the largest space allocated to cereal by Paraná farmers since 1980.

Production has the potential to reach a record 4.6 million tons in 2023, 30% above the previous volume. The data was released this Thursday (29) by Deral (Department of Rural Economy), which also includes information on the 2022 harvest.

After a year of record production in 2022, Brazil should once again have a good national wheat crop. Producers in Rio Grande do Sul, the state that leads the country’s production, should also increase the planting area. The 2022 harvest was close to 10 million tons.

The wheat area in the past harvest was 1.24 million hectares, with production of 3.5 million tons, according to data from the state department.

In addition to a larger area, wheat will have this year, if the weather helps, an increase in productivity to 3,279 kg per hectare, an increase of 15% over 2022. of the past harvest. Carlos Hugo Godinho, an analyst for this cereal from Deral, explains the reason for this gain in area.

The lengthening of the soybean crop cycle in various regions of the state meant that the ideal period for planting corn was lost. As a result, producers opted for wheat.

Corn, which disputes area with wheat in the winter crop in much of the state, loses space. This year, the area of ​​the second crop of this cereal retreats to 2.42 million hectares, 12% less than in 2022. Despite this drop, production grows and will have a potential of 13.8 million tons, 4% more . This is because the state’s average productivity is forecast at 5,713 kg per hectare.

One of the novelties is the growth of the area and production of barley. Paraná farmers are expected to produce 382,000 tons this year, 14% more than in 2022.

Cassava, one of the basic foodstuffs and which Paraná is one of the main producers in the country, is also gaining ground this year. With an estimated productivity of 24.3 tons per hectare, the cassava production potential rises to 3.3 million tons in the 2022/23 harvest.

The first grain harvest in the state, the summer one, showed a strong increase in productivity, according to data presented by Deral. The corn average was 9,907 kg per hectare; and soy, 3,882.
As a result, soybean production rose to a record 22.5 million tons in Paraná, 80% more than in 2022, when productivity had been affected by adverse weather effects.
