Out-of-home food sector registers high, but average ticket is low

Brazilians spent BRL 216 billion on food away from home in 2022, 27% more than in 2021. Data from the Instituto Foodservice Brasil, in partnership with Mosaiclab, reveal the growth in consumption in the sector. Tonin warns that, although the numbers indicate that people are willing to spend more on food, the average meal ticket in 2022 was R$19.27. “This may be an indication that people are opting for more affordable meals in the midst of the economic crisis”, she points out.
“Although the country’s economic situation may present challenges, it is unlikely that there will be a drop in out-of-home food consumption this year,” he says. For the economist, even in the midst of an economic crisis, people still prioritize eating away from home as a form of leisure and socialization, which can help sustain the sector.
