‘Our Center’ is exhibited at the City Museum, presenting architectural design, works and history

Manaus (AM) – After two centuries of the Belle Époque, of its luxury, vigor and wealth, the Municipality of Manaus has acted intensely and without measuring its own resources to rescue the historic center of the capital with a view to the recovery, revitalization and rehabilitation of the region with the program “Our Center ”, launched by Mayor David Almeida in 2021.

And the projects, plans, programs and part of the history related to the central region gave rise to an institutional and heritage education exhibition, which will be on display at the City Museum, starting this Tuesday, 8/8, with free admission, on panels set up to present to the population, students and visitors such an important rescue of the architectural, cultural and human heritage of the city. The show was organized by a team from the Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (Implurb) and has the support of the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult).

The historic center has been listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) since 2012, according to which “it presents an urban portion formed by buildings from the golden period mixed with modern buildings”. Its listed area “represents one of the greatest testimonies of a unique economic phase in Brazil: the rubber period”.

In the 15 panels on display at the museum, the public will be able to check out the projects developed under the management of David Almeida; works under construction in the area – Lúcia Almeida viewpoint, Thiago de Mello mansion and São Vicente square –, which involved the expropriation of six properties; and the projects under development, such as the renovation and conservation of the Palácio Rio Branco, the renovation and reuse of the Porto Museum and the new housing proposed for the territory.

The “Nosso Centro” program seeks ways to promote renovations and recovery of abandoned or unused properties, creating new quality areas, such as those already under construction between the beginning of 7 de Setembro and Rua Bernardo Ramos. But also a series of actions to improve governance, tax incentives, innovation, social housing and public investments, also involving the promotion of cultural events and creative economy.

With a set of 37 interventions designed for four stages, the program’s architecture was developed and coordinated by Implurb, with action by the Technical Commission for the Implementation and Revitalization of the Historic Center of Manaus. The commission was created by Municipal Decree nº 5.034/2021 and has the municipal secretariats of Finance and Information Technology (Semef); of Work, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Semtepi); of Women, Social Assistance and Citizenship (Semasc); of Public Security and Social Defense (Semseg); and Urban Cleaning (Semulsp); in addition to the Municipal Institute of Urban Mobility (IMMU) and Manauscult.

The program

“Our Center”, as presented in the exhibition, has three focal axes: “More Life”, “More Business” and “More History”, and adds to an architectural complex of great relevance for the city.

For the director-president of Manauscult, Osvaldo Cardoso, it is extremely important for society to know the origin and history of the Manaus people, as well as the joint work of the Manaus City Hall secretariats for the cultural and historical development of the Amazonian capital.

“A people without history is doomed to failure, so this exhibition, telling the story of where it all began, which is in the historic center, is a very rich element that needs to be explored by students, researchers and society as a whole. And this partnership with Implurb and other secretariats, comes to strengthen even more the rescue of the center of our city, the rescue of our culture and origin”,

The central region of Manaus is a visible memory of the built heritage, cultural heritage and Amazonian ancestry, displayed in all its beauty, both structural and decorative. And this important part of history is told by its buildings, many erected in the Belle Époque, creating a relationship of affection for many manauaras, full of culture, in the midst of residences and streets of intense commerce.

“A healthy city, rich in quality for its inhabitants, which values ​​its past”, said the director of the Museum of the City of Manaus (Muma), Leonardo Novellino, curator of the exhibition. “And the current management of Mayor David Almeida values ​​the memory of the city of Manaus by investing in the future. Valuing the historic center is extremely important and now it has been reclassified, given special attention, revealing a multi-millenary richness, a whole legacy of the original indigenous peoples, in their knowledge and practices, in their gastronomy, in their medicine, in their pharmacology ”,

Novellino recalls the two great economic moments of the capital, one in the Belle Époque and the other in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, where the Center is transformed, goes through and overcomes changes and adjusts itself to time. “It’s a rich history that, now, with ‘Nosso Centro’, can be rehabilitated for the population, thanks to all these investments and the requalification of the area”.

With “Nosso Centro”, the city hall wants to bring more life and make the region “bubble” by creating business opportunities, moving the civil construction market and improving urban spaces. “Manaus, like six other cities in Brazil, has requalification plans for its Center. Here, we seek to enhance and value our culture, making it an important physical and cultural heritage for future generations. Our role aims to preserve and conserve the monuments, but also to rehabilitate, to give new uses within the legislation in force, bringing their occupation to the contemporary, with social, economic, historical, symbolic values, within a traditional Center”, stated the CEO of Implurb, Carlos Valente.

Rehabilitating is a combination of activities, enabling new spaces, rehabilitating based on new functions, reuse, public policies, incentives and private initiatives, focusing on multiple urban functions, but preserving the historicity of the same urban fragment.

And it is in the center of the capital that you can still find monuments and urban sites on the municipal territory, which has one of the best installed infrastructures, but which coexists with underutilized fragments that need occupation.

The large area of ​​intervention of the City of Manaus is located in an area of ​​federal protection, in the vicinity of other historic buildings, such as the Óscar Ramos Cultural Center, Museum of the City of Manaus, Dom Pedro II square, Casarão da Inovação Cassina, Palácio Rio Branco , among others.

Against the background of the beauty of the Negro River and the view of the journalist Phellipe Daou bridge, today, works in the central region are proceeding at an accelerated pace and have a deadline of 300 consecutive days. The prediction is that they will be inaugurated before Christmas this year, a true gift to the population and their assets.
