On Saturday (5), she will perform alone at the coronation. “I’m too excited to be nervous,” she said. “It’s an amazing moment in my life as a girl, as a South African, as an artist, just joy fills my heart.” Months after singing in Windsor, a phone call interrupted rehearsals at the Vienna State Opera to ask the 38-year-old if she would like to perform at the coronation in London on May 6. “That was my audition, I guess,” said Yende, recalling the night in Windsor during an interview backstage at the opera house. “It was the first time I met the king,” she said. “He was very kind, very warm.” Yende will be the first African to sing alone at a British coronation. Millions are expected to watch the televised event, possibly the biggest audience of Yende’s career to date and a “dream come true”, she said. At the coronation, Yende will present “Sacred Fire”, a work written by composer Sarah Class for the occasion. “For me, it’s a soul business,” said Yende. “Whether you’re a king, a princess or just a girl from the tip of Africa singing for the king’s coronation.” South African soprano Pretty Yende to sing at King Charles coronation REUTERS/Lisa Leutner
