NYT charges Biden to stop ‘Cold War invocations’ – 03/12/2023 – Nelson de Sá

Without hiding the astonishment with the agreement negotiated by Beijing, between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the news in the New York Times changed over the course of three days. On Friday, at first, he even avoided mentioning China in the statement.

On Saturday, in a headline, he said that it was “mediated by China, leaving the US on the sidelines”, China that “challenges the US”. Further, in a call for review below, “China’s role underscores Xi Jinping’s ambition to provide an alternative to the US-led world order.”

He highlighted the opinion of the Council on Foreign Relations, linked to the foreign policy establishment, that “some in the Gulf clearly see this as the Chinese century”. Worse, “the Saudis express their willingness to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization”, focused on multipolar security, including Russia and India.

Finally, on Sunday, the news in the newspaper changed for good, accepting that the “pact can transform the Middle East” and that Saudi Arabia and Iran, “as well as the entire region, have much to gain.” That it was “a coup from China”, a victory.

In the background, the same NYT produced an editorial, featured prominently from Saturday, charging Joe Biden to contain his “increasingly conflicted posture”, under the title “Who benefits from the confrontation with China?”:

“The US-China relationship, for all its problems, continues to bring substantial economic benefits to the people of both countries and the rest of the world. Superficial invocations of the Cold War are misguided. look to realize that this relationship is very different.”

Although it cites the agreement mediated by China, the motivation of the editorial seems to have been another – the virtual abandonment of the World Trade Organization by Biden, in the wake of Donald Trump:

“The US should not walk away from forums where it has long engaged with China. The WTO operates a court of appeals to hear trade disputes. The court, however, has not functioned for over two years [porque] the Biden administration declined to provide support. This is an error.

“The construction of a rules-based international order, in which America played a leading role, was one of the most important achievements of the 20th century. It cannot be preserved if the US does not continue to participate in these institutions.”

On Friday, as Reuters and others reported, Japan had joined an “alternative resource mechanism” formed two years ago that already brings together dozens of countries. Among them, China and Brazil, as well as other Asian and Latin American countries and the entire European Union. With the US on the sidelines.
