NGOs want condemnation of RS councilor in R$ 1 million – 05/03/2023 – Panel SA

Entities linked to the defense of human rights and the fight against racism are asking for the conviction of councilor Sandro Fantinel (without party), from Caxias de Sul (RS), in R$ 1 million as compensation for moral and collective damages.

On Tuesday (28), Fantinel said, in a speech at the tribune of the municipal legislature, that companies and rural producers should hire “clean” employees to harvest the grapes, like the Argentines, and should not look for “those people up there “.

The parliamentarian’s statement was a reaction to the operation that, days before, rescued workers, the majority coming from Bahia, in a situation analogous to slavery. They were hired by a company that provided services to the Salton, Aurora and Cooperativa Garibaldi wineries, who say they were not aware of the situation.

Fantinel later apologized and attributed the attacks to a “mental lapse”. Then affiliated with Patriota, he was expelled from the acronym.

In the public civil action filed on Friday (3) in the Court of Caxias do Sul, the entities defend that the compensation must be paid to repair the “collective moral damage and social damage inflicted on the poor population and the black population of Brazil, in reason for the racist, intolerant and xenophobic speech by Councilman Sandro Fantinel against the Bahian population”.

Sign the request to Educafro (Education and Citizenship of Afro-descendants and the needy), the Santo Dias Center for Human Rights, Iara (Institute of Racial and Environmental Advocacy) and the Sawabona Shikoba Cultural Association.

In addition to compensation, the entities ask for the imposition of public retraction, that he participate in a course on human rights standards, with an emphasis on dignity, equality and non-discrimination, and that he pay for a formal session to celebrate the culture of Bahia.

Educafro and Centro Santo Dias also acted in actions against Carrefour, after the death of a black man by a private security guard, and LinkedIn, which maintained a policy that barred job advertisements with quotas.
