Ney Matogrosso celebrates Gal Costa with the recording of ‘Nada mais’ in a duet with João Fênix

♪ Ney Matogrosso had confirmed his presence on João Fênix’s duets album since the phonographic project was conceived in early 2021. All that was left was to choose the song. With the death of Gal Costa (1945 – 2022) on November 9, Ney had the idea of celebrating the singer, with whom he recorded Espinha de bacalhau (Severino Araújo, 1945, with lyrics by Fausto Nilo, 1981) on an album produced by Marco Mazzola and released in 1981. The song chosen for the homage was Nada mais (1984), a Portuguese version of the ballad Lately (Stevie Wonder, 1980), written by Ronaldo Bastos, presented by Gal in the album Profana (1984) and revived in the last singer’s show, The various tips of a star (2021). Ney is the first to sing Nada Mais on the unprecedented record that will be released on May 11th in a single edited by the Biscoito Fino label. Only after, at one minute and 40 seconds, does the androgynous voice of João Fênix, a singer from Pernambuco descended from the vocal line opened by Ney in Brazilian music in 1973, 50 years ago, enter. Punctuated by the harmonica of Flávio Guimarães, in phrasing that evokes recordings by Stevie Wonder, the approach of Nada mais by Fênix and Ney also has the touches of Alberto Continentino’s bass, Jaime Alem’s guitar, Luiz Otávio’s piano. The duet marks the reunion of João Fênix and Ney Matogrosso in the studio 22 years after the recording of Fim de mundo (Fim de mundo) (Patrícia Mello, 2001) on the first album by the artist from Pernambuco, Eu, cause and effect (2001).
