The French subsidiary of Nestlé will compensate dozens of victims in the case of Buitoni pizzas contaminated by the E. coli bacteria, as part of an agreement signed on March 31 – the parties announced this Monday (17), without revealing the amount to be paid .

“With the aim of contributing, within a reasonable time, to the satisfaction of the victims and their families, Nestlé France has decided to join an amicable compensation process,” the company said.

Two children died, and dozens more became seriously ill, after eating, in 2022, pizzas from the Fresh’UP brand by Buitoni, a subsidiary of Nestlé.

“Each of the affected people will receive a compensation proposal from Nestlé France, which will follow a medical assessment and which will take into account, fairly, the seriousness of the damage and each situation”, indicated the branch of the Swiss giant, number one in the world. agrifood industry.

“This process should eventually allow fair compensation for their damages,” lawyer Pierre Debuisson, who represents 63 victims, said in a separate statement.

Debuisson sued Nestlé for “serious misconduct” at the Nanterre court, outside Paris, and asked for damages of 250 million euros (R$ 1.3 billion) for its customers.

The company has not been charged so far, and the group says it “will fully assume its responsibilities”, Nestlé told AFP.

In March, a year after the case, Nestlé announced the definitive closure of the factory in Caudry, in northern France, where the pizzas were produced.
