Purina, Nestlé’s brand of pet products, this week announced the recall of one of its pet foods after receiving reports of dogs showing signs of vitamin D intoxication.
According to the company, the feed was distributed only with a doctor’s prescription by veterinary clinics and retailers in the United States.
Purina advises pet owners to throw the product away. It also asks veterinarians and stores to remove it from stock.
The company claims that it was informed of two cases of dogs with suspected poisoning.
“Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, however, ingesting high levels can lead to health problems depending on the level of vitamin D and duration of exposure. Vitamin D intoxication can include vomiting, loss of appetite , increased thirst, increased urination, excessive salivation and even kidney dysfunction,” the company wrote in the recall announcement.
