National pizza production is 44 units per second

Pizza arrived in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century through the hands of Italian immigrants and here it conquered one of the largest markets in the world. It is estimated that in the country 44 pizzas are produced per second. That is, just as you read the opening lines of this content, more than 400 pizzas were made in Brazil. According to data from the Associação Pizzarias Unidas do Brasil (Apubra), national production of pizza reaches 3.8 million units per day.
Most of this is concentrated in the state of São Paulo, where production reaches 870,000 units of pizza daily. In Paraná, the numbers are also surprising.
According to data released by iFood, state consumers made almost 6 million pizza orders in 2022, only via the delivery app. Across the country, 143 million units were sold via iFood. The highest volume of orders is for the weekend dinner. The champion promotions in the app are the combos with soda.
Among the favorite flavors of Brazilians, the classics are still in the lead. The pepperoni pizza is in first place, according to the Apubra survey. Next, mozzarella, and margherita, which appears in third position. Portuguese and chicken are in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The Apubra study was carried out based on a survey applied to 203 enterprises in the pizzeria sector, between June 13th and 16th, 2023, during Fispal Food Service, one of the largest foodservice fairs in the country. In addition to figures on production and the Brazilians’ preferred flavor profile, the survey also brought indications of trends.
National pizza production also looks at restrictive diets
According to the study, pizzerias are more concerned with meeting the demand of consumers who adhere to restrictive diets, offering vegan and vegetarian options.
“Pizzerias are increasingly inclusive, focused on offering the best flavor options for all types of palates. Currently, 64.7% of the mapped units have options with zero lactose, wholemeal pasta, gluten-free or vegan and vegetarian variations. This shows the diversity of pizza production in Brazil”, commented the president of the Association, Gustavo Cardamoni.
