The Government of Amapá promoted moments of leisure and environmental awareness on Friday, 21st, in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Curiaú River, in Macapá. The action is part of the national campaign ‘A Day in the Park’ which, in 2023, has the theme ‘It’s time to take care of our home’ and seeks to attract visitors to environmental conservation units throughout Brazil, raising awareness of the need for environmental preservation.

In Amapá, the program included canoe trips on the Curiaú River and its tributaries, artistic presentations of mara bass, environmental awareness and contemplation of the sunset. Activities focused on the APA’s panoramic deck, recently inaugurated by the State Government to encourage sustainable tourism in the region.

One of the participants was the tourist from São Paulo Lucas Sales, who is in the capital of Amapá on tour and had the opportunity to discover the beauty of the Amazonian landscape.
“This movement of awareness of the need to take care of this place is fundamental for maintaining the area of a space that is only seen in the North of Brazil”, said the tourist.

heated economy

The movement boosted local trade sales, as detailed by saleswoman Luana Paixão, who manages one of the kiosks in the space.
“When actions like this take place, our sales increase considerably and this, without a doubt, improves our profit, helps in publicizing our establishment and our cuisine”, said the merchant.

The program was organized by the State Secretariats for the Environment (Sema), Tourism (Setur) and Culture (Secult) to encourage contact between the population and nature. Sema’s manager, Taisa Mendonça, highlighted the symbolism of the campaign and the Government’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness.

“We are committed to preserving the natural resources of Amapá. The Um Dia no Parque campaign is an excellent opportunity to unite efforts in favor of the environment, and with the support of the population, we can achieve the expected results”, said the secretary.

more preservation

For Sema’s Conservation Units and Biodiversity Management coordinator, Euryandro Costa, joining the campaign is a way of valuing state conservation units and raising awareness of the need to preserve these areas.
“The conservation units, each with its particularities, are rich and have great potential in relation to biodiversity, which need to be known and understood, so that they can be used responsibly and sustainably, and bring society in general into the natural spaces, this being an initiative to value these units”, punctuated Euryandro.

The resident of the Quilombo do Curiaú and employee of Sema Rosa Ramos spoke of the meaning of a moment like this for the residents of the APA.

“We are in a privileged day, that the APA of Rio Curiaú entered the programming of the national campaign Um Dia no Parque and for us, as residents, it is of fundamental importance to show everyone how beautiful this place is and how much it needs to be preserved”, said Rosa.

A performance of mara bass performed by students from the José Bonifácio State School, located in the Quilombo, made the event even more representative of the culture of Amapa. After participating in the dance, Tomás Ramos, a student at the school and resident of the community, said that being part of this moment is a privilege.

“It’s very important to know that there are still people who are interested in getting to know and perpetuating our culture, especially marabaixo and batuque, which are so strong”, said Tomás.

protected spaces

The Curiaú River APA is one of the 21 Conservation Units in Amapá. These spaces are protected by law and play a fundamental role in preserving natural resources, promoting scientific research, recreation, leisure and environmental education, but also guarantee sustainable use through concessions for forest management, extractivism, environmental services and guarantees of rights for traditional communities.

The action was supported by the Environmental Battalion, the Fire Department, the Military Police, the Institute for Environmental Protection (INPA) and the José Bonifácio State School.
