The work that journalist and broadcaster Paulo Moreira has developed over his more than 40 years in the profession has not only made him a reference in jazz and the instrumental music segment, but has also earned him many affections. Dozens of friends that his trajectory in the area brought him are involved in the production and execution of the first edition of the Paulo Moreira Festival, which takes place from this Thursday and continues until Sunday. There will be more than 22 concerts, bringing together around 80 instrumentalists, who will perform in four places in the city’s music scene: Café Fon Fon, Espaço 373, Gravador Pub and Sala Jazz Geraldo Flach. Tickets cost R$ 35.00 (per night) and can be purchased through the Sympla platform.

All proceeds will go towards Moreira’s health treatment, diagnosed with kidney failure at the age of 35 and who has been dealing with the worsening of the disease in recent times. “He will have a lot of care from now on, as he also has very low mobility, due to a hip fracture, and needs someone to accompany him 24 hours a day”, comments one of the journalist’s daughters, Rafaela Brezezinski Moreira. “The financial aid is for the period he needs to stay in bed, waiting for the decision, or not, of a surgery to regain mobility, or even so that he can undergo physiotherapy after this operation, in case the medical board understands that there is no greater scratchs.”

Anyone who doesn’t go to the shows and wants to donate any amount, can do so via PIX, whose key is CPF 01510705040 (Roberta Brezezinski Moreira). One of the creators of the festival, federal employee Claudia Beylouni Santos, highlights the importance of journalists’ work for their cultural training. “The Sessão Jazz program (which was on air on FM Cultura for almost 20 years) enriched the souls of many people. Paulinho has a lot of knowledge about everything involving jazz, cinema and music in general, and he shares it with charming generosity”, celebrate her.

“He understands rock, blues, MPB; he was once the music coordinator of the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Porto Alegre. We could easily have invited artists from other styles to perform at the festival”, comments fellow journalist Roger Lerina, who for four decades he is a personal friend of the honoree and is part of the event’s organizing committee. “The idea of bringing together groups and musicians from the jazz and instrumental segment was (as a way of) valuing this connection he established with both languages.”

“I believe that there is no artist or instrumental group that has emerged in the last two decades that did not have in Paulo a stimulator and a promoter who, in one way or another, opened spaces and valued their musical productions”, agrees journalist Marcio Pinheiro. For over 30 years, he and Moreira have enjoyed a close relationship, which translates into lunches, parties, trips, records, books and “many other affinities”.

In addition to dedicating most of his career to the production, writing and broadcasting of musical content on television and radio, Moreira also took courses on the History of Jazz and Rock for four years within the StudioClio program, in addition to the Audições Comentadas project, at the Language Institute. “My daughter and I attended these events”, comments Claudia. The organization of the festival also includes musician João Maldonado, journalists Roberta Amaral and Cássia Zanon, doctor José Beltrame ‘Cusco’, and sound engineer Marcos Abreu.

The mobilization was born in a WhatsApp group and grew quickly. “We got in touch with the owners of the venues, who immediately agreed, and everyone started to invite groups and musician friends”, says Lerina. “We managed to bring together a group that, even within the spectrum of instrumental music, has formations linked to the regional segment of the South, such as Quartchêto and Instrumental Picumã; or even blues, such as Hard Blues Trio and Conjunto Bluegrass Porto -Alegrense. Another example would be the band Funkalister, which unites funk, rock, groove, and black American music”, he summarizes.

The first attraction of the festival takes place at 8:30 pm this Thursday, at Café Fon Fon. On Friday, the event takes place at Espaço 373. On Saturday, Gravador Pub will open its doors at 2 pm for a musical marathon – with ten bands and more jam sessions – until the end of the night. Sunday the party is at Sala Jazz Geraldo Flach. The complete program can be accessed via festival link. The festival will also have the support of artists such as cartoonist Fraga, musician and painter Edgar Duvivier and photographers Daisson Flach, Douglas Fischer and Nilton Santolin, from Atmosfera Produtora, who will donate works to be auctioned. There will also be support from Texo Cabral and Reverber Produtora, who will record the audio and video of the presentations at the Gravador Pub.
