Multiartist from Manaus launches poetry book “Before we die”

Manaus (AM) – Debut book by composer and poet Ana Larousse (@larousse.ana), “Antes que a gente morra” (100 pages) explores in fluid poems a universe in which the urgency of life, memory and experiences transform into moments everyday life and function as a call to contemplation. Published by Urutau, the work combines images with the subjective universe of the lyrical self, while playing with incompleteness and other voices, having poems that invite the reader to watch an unfinished scene.
The beginning of the work, signed by multi-artist and interdisciplinary researcher Francisco Mallmann, highlights that the poet writes “as if life and poetry were a single practice” and, from the title, invites those who read to perceive the intensity of the most banal acts as what makes us people.
“Attentive to the different times of events in the worlds – internal and external – Ana offers us, through words, an experience in memory”,
observes Francisco.
This intertwined relationship between writing and life, so present in Ana’s poetry, is intentional and is ingrained in her own creative process. And this unfolds in his interest in autobiographical writings or absolutely poetic and profound letters, found in the writing of authors such as Patti Smith, Simone de Beauvoir, David Foster Wallace, Hemingway, Osamu Dazai, Edward Said, Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, Vincent Van Gogh, Carolina Maria de Jesus and the most recent passion Annie Ernaux.
The poet likes to read works in which she can accompany an artist who is disturbed in order to record his own existence through words. For her, it is not enough to share facts and anecdotes, she wants to read reflections, anguish and confusion, and considers that this interest demonstrates that she cannot escape this as an artist either. “I find it fascinating that they take me to walk through someone’s story that actually happened. I feel like I’m traveling through the multiverse. The reality is absolutely fascinating. It amazes me and captivates me much more than any fiction.”
About the author
Ana Larousse was born in Manaus (AM), but grew up in Curitiba (PR). At the age of 18, he moved to Paris and lived there for six years, while studying contemporary art at Université Paris 8. Upon returning to Brazil, he recorded his first original album, produced by Rodrigo Lemos (Lemoskine, ÀVUÀ) with songs he wrote abroad, which motivated her to travel around Brazil doing shows. Since she returned to the country, she lives in São Paulo and works mainly as a writing workshop facilitator, translator and composer.
Feeling the world, perceiving it in its details and falling in love with its effect on people’s lives guide the writing of Ana Larousse, who uses words to explore other artistic fields. “My feeling is that everything I do is linked to words. Writing is my meeting point for everything I am and do. They generally define me as a multi-artist,” she says, highlighting the importance of music, performing arts and cinema in her life.
Its main references are many and for different reasons. In addition to the aforementioned authors who write autobiographical works, a great influence on “Antes que gente morra”, the author cites, due to her games with words, writing and languages, Georges Perec, James Joyce, Machado de Assis and Raymond Queneau. For the beauty of free and liberating writing, Alberto Caeiro, Diane di Prima and Sylvia Plath. The poet emphasizes that she is also always attentive to national and contemporary cultural production, from different scenes and regions of the country.
