Next Wednesday (29), the Labor Public Prosecutor’s Office will hold another administrative hearing with representatives of Volkswagen to close a reparation agreement in a case of workers found in conditions analogous to slavery during the 1970s and 1980s.
The MPT has been investigating, since 2019, the company for the occurrence of work analogous to slavery at the Vale do Rio Cristalino farm, which was known as Fazenda Volkswagen, located in the municipality of Santana do Araguaia, in the south of Pará. The accusation indicates that the workers were subjected to precarious employment conditions, with a debt bondage regime and armed surveillance.
Next week’s hearing will be the fourth in the case, and the MPT hopes that an individual reparation agreement will be signed for 14 workers identified as victims, in addition to collective compensation.
Sought by Panel SA, Volkswagen did not manifest itself.
In September, during another round of conversations, Volkswagen told the MPT, in writing, that it understands that it is not responsible for the occurrence of slave labor on the farm. The automaker’s representatives argued that the occurrence is old and that other people were involved in what happened on the property.
For the MPT, it was impossible for the control of the activities of the workers, responsible for transforming an area of 139,000 hectares into pasture, not to have the consent of Volkswagen.
