Mover will give 30,000 English scholarships to black people – 07/03/2023 – Market

Mover (Movement for Racial Equity) will open 30,000 new English scholarships for black people in partnership with the teaching company EF Education First. Registration, exclusive to blacks and browns, will begin on July 24 and will be announced on social media and on the initiative’s website.

Details on who can apply, duration of the course and general selection criteria will be released in the coming weeks. The announcement of the grants was made during an event celebrating the initiative’s two years in operation, held at the end of June, at Instituto Tomie Ohtake, in São Paulo.

In addition to the courses, the movement launched the game “Bora Mover”, a racial literacy tool that addresses topics such as the history of black people, racism and anti-racist mobilization.

Founded in June 2021, Mover is an initiative that brings together 49 large companies and has the goal of achieving 10,000 new leadership positions for black people by 2030, in addition to generating 3 million opportunities through courses, training and connections with entrepreneurs.

Among the companies that make up the group are Coca-Cola Brasil, Colgate-Palmolive, CSN, Danone, Descomplica, and the consulting firms McKinsey & Company and PwC Brasil, the last to join the movement.

During the event, Marina Peixoto, executive director of Mover, also announced that the organization is working on the development of an application that will “match” job opportunities and black candidates, directing selection specifications to the professional’s profile.

The idea is to unite job vacancies and qualification actions developed by Mover. In the last year, the group promoted training for the first job and training of black leaders for corporate positions.

Companies that are part of the movement need to commit to goals for racial equity. According to Carlos Domingues, executive director of Mover and leader of the area of ​​diversity, equity and inclusion at PepsiCo, the objectives were divided into short-term targets and the companies render accounts on their advances, but the numbers do not yet have a date for be disclosed.

In the list of members, there are companies that were involved in episodes of racism, as is the case of Carrefour. In November 2020, João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old black man, was beaten and killed by chain security guards at a unit in Porto Alegre.

Subsequently, in agreement with justice institutions, the company undertook to take on anti-racist actions.

About Mover’s position regarding these cases, Domingues says that every company signs the commitments of the Movement for Racial Equity before becoming part of the group.

“The challenges are great in our country, we cannot forget that, but we have learned a lot in this context”, he says. “We believe that it is collectively that we are going to build a purposeful agenda to deconstruct this structural racism.”
