Most men pee wrong, says urologist – 01/06/2023 – Health

Although urinating is something so fundamental and everyday, apparently the vast majority of men have done it the wrong way, or at least not in the ideal way, according to a renowned urologist.

However, a survey of more than 7,000 men from 13 countries showed that many never do.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

The research, carried out recently by the YouGov institute, revealed that the majority of men in the world choose to urinate standing up.

According to the survey, 33% of Britons said they would never consider the possibility of peeing sitting down; another 24% said they sit down sometimes, and only 9% always sit down.

Men from countries like Mexico and Poland have made it clear that they would not be willing to sit down to urinate. In Mexico, where only 6% said they always sit down to pee, 36% said they would never adopt that position. Brazil was not included in the survey.

The survey revealed other interesting cultural differences. In Germany, almost 40% of men always sit down to urinate. In the United States, it’s only 10%. In the European country, there has been a cultural change in recent decades and, today, for hygiene reasons, there are signs in many public restrooms in Germany that ask men not to urinate standing up.

According to Collins, among the countries in the survey, the Germans are the ones that are adopting the most correct position. A recent study from the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands, concluded that urinating while sitting can be beneficial by facilitating faster and more complete emptying of the bladder.

“Sitting down is probably the most effective way to do this”, said the urologist, explaining that the muscles of the pelvis and spine are completely relaxed in this position, facilitating the process of urination.

BENEFIT FOR OLDER PEOPLE

The urologist also pointed out in the interview that peeing sitting down can be more beneficial for men as they age, due to a disorder known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which affects the vast majority of men over time.

BPH occurs when there is an enlargement of the prostate and surrounding tissue that compresses the urethra – the tube that runs from the bladder through the prostate and into the penis. This obstruction makes it difficult to pass urine. Men with this disorder may have bladder stones, urinary tract and even kidney infections if the bladder is not completely emptied.

“BPH is caused by a change in the hormonal environment of the prostate, especially after the age of 40. There is an increase in a certain testosterone breakdown product that causes the prostate to increase its cell development and size. men start to notice that they can urinate much better sitting down,” explains Collins.
