It’s a lie that people eat poorly in the United States. I lie: you eat too badly there, but you also eat well. Very good.

The myth that the US is a gastronomic hell stems from reciprocity in international relations. Americans treat the rest of the world like dirt and get an equivalent amount of grudging in return.

If we leave aside the dislike and laziness to go beyond ridiculous food and fast food chains, there is a lot of interesting things in the gringa gastronomic scene.

New York, for example, leaves São Paulo in the dust in terms of variety and ethnic diversity. I remembered this for two reasons.

First, because the daughter, son-in-law and grandson have just returned from there. Being back, they stop making me jealous by posting Chinese, Ethiopian, Jewish, Italian and even American food.

And because, a few days ago, there was talk again about a New York restaurant called Serendipity 3, which boasts of holding world records for some of the most expensive food in the world.

Yes, the astonishing diversity of the New York scene also includes the most expensive and tacky restaurant of them all. This is America.

Serendipity has produced the world’s most expensive french fries, the world’s most expensive hamburger, and the world’s most expensive cup of ice cream, among other aberrations. To raise the price so high, they resort to truffles, caviar, rare drinks, edible gold (hello, Brazilian national team) and crystal pieces that the sucker buyer can take home.

In April of this year, it offered the most expensive cheese sandwich in the world, for US$ 214 (about R$ 1,100).

Let’s go to that sandwich. The bread, they say, is made with Don Pérignon champagne, which costs from a thousand reais. It can only be a lie, and no one can prove it. If true, it’s the biggest atrocity anyone can do with such a drink.

And then there’s the cheese from XYZ Italian cows, white truffles, gold and the usual tackiness. It is served with a lobster soup in a crystal glass. Does anyone buy? I believe so, because it is the USA and there are people capable of doing this.

But it also has honest pizza, Italian food and Greek food. Just cross the street.
