Farms reinforce preventive measures against avian flu TV TEM/Reprodução The Ministry of Agriculture declared a zoosanitary emergency for 180 days due to avian flu. The measure was published in the extra edition of the Official Gazette this Monday (22). According to the government, so far eight cases of H5N1 have been confirmed in Brazil, seven in Espírito Santos and one in Rio de Janeiro. All cases involve wild birds. The ministry informed that the measure is necessary to prevent the disease from reaching subsistence and commercial poultry production, in addition to protecting fauna and human health. By declaring a zoosanitary emergency, the government is able to allocate resources and create coping actions involving ministries, states and municipalities in a faster and more coordinated way. The Ministry of Agriculture also extended for an indefinite period the suspension of fairs, exhibitions and other events with agglomeration of birds. This measure was adopted at the end of March. The creation of outdoor birds, with access to paddocks without screens at the top, also remains suspended. The determination applies to any species of production, ornamental, passerine, wild or exotic birds that are in captivity or bred for other purposes.
