Minister wants to nominate president of Embrapii – 02/05/2023 – Panel SA

Political articulators in Brasilia say that, at the request of Minister Luciana Santos (Science and Technology), they are working to make Francisco Saboya, from Pernambuco, the new president of Embrapii (Brazilian Company for Research and Industrial Innovation).

Saboya was Sebrae’s superintendent in the state and is linked to the Federal University of Pernambuco, which, this Tuesday (3rd), closes a partnership with Embrapii.

The movement of this group to convince those who decide for the future head of the innovation agency gave rise to a contrary movement led by technicians from Embrapii itself, who are trying to placate federal prosecutor Bruno Portela, former legal adviser to the ministries of Industry and Science and Technology.

Embrapii has a technical selection system and CVs for choosing its directors. The struggle for power that takes place behind the scenes signals a maneuver to disregard the agency’s charter.

Through her advisory, the minister said that the choice at Embrapii will be made by the Search Committee, defined by the board of directors of the agency.

This committee, according to the portfolio, is made up of five members: a representative of civil society; two from industry; one from the Ministry of Education; and one from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

When consulted, Embrapii said that the selection process is still ongoing.

The agency uses resources from a partnership established with the Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Education (MEC) to finance innovation projects in the industry.

To this end, it connects research and companies, and divides risks, by contributing non-refundable resources to projects that lead to the introduction of new products and processes in the market.

In all, the agency operates with 89 university research centers in the country. This Tuesday (3), Minister Luciana Santos will announce another center, signing the cooperation agreement with the Federal University of Pernambuco.

BRL 16 million will be invested in the new research unit that will integrate the university’s Petroleum and Energy Research Institute, reinforcing a portfolio of BRL 2.6 billion in this area.
