The Council accuses Meta of sending European users’ data to the United States, without the company guaranteeing adequate protections in sending the data. The EDPB has also filed an immediate order for the company to stop sharing the data. The decision applies only to Facebook and not to Instagram and WhatsApp, which are also Meta companies. According to an American portal specializing in TechCrunch technology, this is the biggest penalty in the block involving data protection rules. According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta said it will appeal the decision and that there will be no immediate interruption of Facebook service in the European Union. “Without the ability to transfer data across borders, the internet risks being divided into national and regional silos, constraining the global economy and leaving citizens of different countries unable to access many of the shared services we have come to rely on,” Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, and Jennifer Newstead, chief legal officer, in a statement.
