The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, warned Mark Zuckerberg, this Wednesday (11), because of the increase in false information on Meta, responsible for the social networks Facebook and Instagram.
“We are aware of reports of a significant number of deepfakes and manipulated content that have circulated on your platform and some that are still online,” Breton said in his letter.
Therefore, the commissioner requested that Zuckerberg immediately inform the European Union “about the details of the measures it has taken to mitigate these deepfakes”.
On Tuesday (10), Breton had sent a letter to Elon Musk, warning him about the misinformation circulating on his social network X, formerly Twitter, following the terrorist attack by the Hamas group against Israel, carried out on Saturday.
In the request to Zuckerberg, Breton highlighted that “following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have witnessed an increase in illegal content and disinformation spreading in the EU through certain platforms.” Therefore, she asked him to remain “very attentive”.
The commissioner recalled that the Digital Services Law requires “timely, diligent and objective” action against illegal content, and the need for a “proportionate and effective measures” response.
“I urgently invite you to ensure that your systems are effective. Needless to say, we also expect you to contact the relevant law enforcement authorities and Europol,” Breton explained.
Just as was done with Musk, Breton gave Zuckerberg a 24-hour deadline to inform him about the measures adopted to prevent the circulation of misinformation or manipulated information.
