Meat production rises 4.8% in the first quarter – 06/06/2023 – Vaivém

Meat supply increased in the first quarter of this year, which favored the reduction of prices on the domestic market. National production, based on carcass weight, reached 6.62 million tons from January to March, 4.8% more than in the same period last year.

The data were released this Tuesday (6th) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). There was progress in all segments, with greater emphasis on chicken, whose increase was 6.6% in the period. The weight of beef carcasses increased by 3%, and that of pigs, by 2.9%.

One of the quarter’s highlights was the increase in female slaughter. According to the IBGE, there were 19% more than from January to March 2022, in the case of cows, and 16% for heifers. Already the forwarding of oxen for slaughter retreated 7%, to 3.68 million animals.

Rondônia obtained the best percentage performance among the states, but Mato Grosso, by slaughtering 1.2 million animals, maintains the national leadership. The three main producers —Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás— were responsible for 37% of the 7.34 million cattle slaughtered in the first three months of this year.

Chicken slaughter was a record in this first quarter, and Paraná was responsible for 34% of the 1.6 billion animals slaughtered. The three southern states, the largest producers of protein, accounted for 58% of the total produced in the country,

The South also dominates pork production. Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul were responsible for 48% of this protein, with Santa Catarina alone accounting for 30%. Swine slaughter was a record.

The milk sector, unlike the meat sector, is not doing so well. Production fell to 5.88 billion liters in the first three months of the year, according to the IBGE, down 1.2% compared to 2022. lower product in the field and high retail prices.

The greater supply of beef occurred in a period of interruption of protein sales to China, which further helped to an internal drop in prices. This year, sector follow-up surveys, carried out by Fipe (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas), indicate an accumulated drop of 4.4% for beef. The chicken retreated 10.8%, and pork, 1.7%.
