Lula wants Dilma to be president of the Brics bank – 02/16/2023 – Market

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Thursday (16) that, if it were up to him, Dilma Rousseff would be the next president of the Bank of the Brics, groups of emerging economy countries formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

“Look, if it’s up to me, she will [ser a presidente do banco]”, said Lula in an interview with CNN. The broadcaster began broadcasting excerpts from the interview and the entirety should air at 6 pm.

Afterwards, Lula spent a few minutes praising the former president, who left office after an impeachment process. The PT even went so far as to state that, if he had been a minister in Dilma’s government, she would not have been dismissed.

President Lula’s government began negotiations to replace the president of the New Development Bank — the official name of the Bank of the Brics. The position is currently occupied by Marcos Troyjo, a declared critic of the PT and who even referred to the president as “convict”.

The representative would like the situation to be resolved in the coming days, before his trip to China. Lula would like Dilma, his candidate, to join the entourage. He intends to reach the Asian giant with her in his entourage.

Lula stated in the interview that the possible nomination of Dilma for the presidency of the bank will be a “wonderful” thing for the Brics and for Brazil.

The representative also praised the petista. He said that she would not have been impeached if he had been her minister. He argued that there was a lack of conversation during the course of the process.

“Dilma is an extraordinary figure. I, possibly, if I hadn’t been president and I had been Dilma’s political minister, what happened wouldn’t have happened. Because I think there was a lack of conversation, a little patience” , said Lula.

“But Dilma is an extraordinary woman, a person worthy of a lot of respect, and the PT adores her. Along with the PT militancy, she is very dear. And she has something that she is very technically competent. So, if she becomes president of the Brics bank, it will be a wonderful thing for the Brics, it will be a wonderful thing for Brazil”, he added.

In March 2016, then President Dilma even appointed Lula as Minister of the Civil House. At the time, there were criticisms that the objective would only be to grant privileged jurisdiction to Lula, at a time when the Lava Jato operation was advancing investigations on PT members.

Lula has said in several of his speeches that Dilma was the victim of a coup.

“Everything we did in the PT government was destroyed in six years, after the coup and after the four-year mandate of the genocide that needs to be judged”, said Lula during an act to celebrate the anniversary of the PT this Monday (13 ).

Dilma had her mandate revoked in 2016 in an impeachment process that was carried out in the House and Senate. Both Houses considered that the then president committed a crime of responsibility for the so-called “fiscal disputes”, with the opening of budgetary credit without the approval of Congress.
