President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Monday (3), he disagrees with negative assessments of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) this year. According to him, economic growth will be greater than the “pessimists” predict.

The declaration took place at the opening of a meeting with ministers at the Planalto Palace, on the same day that the Focus Bulletin released the average GDP projection at 0.9%.

“[Eu] I told Fernando Haddad last week that I don’t agree with the negative assessment that GDP will grow by 0.1%, that I don’t know how much GDP will grow,” Lula told the ministers.

“Let’s see what will happen when the so-called micro, small and medium economy starts to happen in the corners of this country. Let’s see what will happen when people start to produce more, buy more, sell more. that the economy is going to make an important leap,” he continued.

The statement also comes at a time when the percentage of Brazilians who foresee a worsening in the economy rose from 20% to 26%, according to a Datafolha poll released this Saturday (1st). Among those that count on an improvement, there was a drop from 49% to 46%, and 26% say they believe that there will be no change in the direction of economic activity.

This week’s, which showed the 2023 GDP stationary, comes after the presentation, last Thursday, by Haddad’s economic team on the new fiscal framework. In his opening speech at the ministerial meeting, Lula also said that the Minister of Economy was happy with the proposal.

The draft text has not yet been finalized. But it should be filed in the coming days, according to the minister, and the government will be able to incorporate the new rules into the 2024 LDO (Budget Guidelines Law) proposal, to be presented by April 15.

The project for the new rule, in turn, will begin processing in the Chamber of Deputies, where it should be analyzed by the committees and then by the plenary. If approved, the text will go to the Senate.

If the Senate changes the version approved in the Chamber, the project will return to the plenary of the deputies, who will have the final word on the content.

Lula made a speech of optimism with the economy, in this which was his first agenda in the Planalto, after dispatching for more than a week in the Palácio da Alvorada during recovery from pneumonia. The Chief Executive also said he disagreed with “pessimistic”.

“I still won’t say what I said in 2005, which was the subject of much ridicule by the press, when I said ‘miracle of growth’. When the Brazilian economy grew 5.8% and the specialized press thought it would not grow”, he said.
