Lula says that deputies do not represent the people and promises exemption of up to R$ 5 thousand

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) resumed his promise to exempt the payment of income tax for those who earn up to R$ 5 thousand, a campaign promise, and that approval of the measure along with other economic proposals depends on deputies of the Chamber who do not necessarily represent the people.

The statements were given during this Tuesday’s weekly live (29) which had peaks of up to three thousand people watching.

According to Lula, half of the exemption promised during the election campaign has already passed with the sanction of the law that corrects the table and exempts up to R$ 2,640, this Monday (28). In the same act, held in Brasilia, the president forwarded to Congress the bill that taxes income from investments abroad, trusts or offshore funds, which was excluded from the minimum wage project to be discussed separately.

A provisional measure was also forwarded that changes the taxation of closed-end funds in Brazil, which may have a 15% taxation. Lula resumed the criticism that rich people should be taxed to reduce inequality, and said that the approval of the measures depends on deputies who do not necessarily represent the people.

“The elected deputies and senators are not representatives, for the most part, of the working people. They are from sectors that came from the middle class, from liberal professionals, many are farmers but do not declare themselves, if they declare themselves accountants, lawyers, doctors, they are people who belong to an upper middle class, ”he said.

He continued by stating that “when a project comes to vote, many times, they do not vote in favor of the interests of the majority of the people. He votes in favor of the interests of the society he lives in, which is even understandable”.

“When election time arrives, the people have to know and vote for people who have an affinity with what they think, want and believe. If we vote clumsily for anyone, who sows the wind, reaps the storm, that is the negative result”, completed Lula.

Lula stated that the targets of the new measures are, mainly, people who live off profits and income that are not taxed, and that he hopes that Congress will vote “in a mature way”.
