Lula removes Correios from privatization program – 07/04/2023 – Market

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) edited a decree, on Thursday (7), removing Correios and EBC (Empresa Brasileira de Comunicação) from the privatization program, included there by his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The two are part of a package of eight excluded from the PPI (Partnership and Investment Programs) and PND (National Privatization Program) programs. The list was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette on Thursday.

The measures were already expected. After his election, Lula had already stated in a speech that privatizations would end in the country. The announcement provoked reaction in the financial market at the time.

At the beginning of the year, shortly after taking office, the president issued an order ordering the paralysis of privatizations.

Correios was already in an advanced process, under analysis by the TCU (Union Court of Auditors).

The process, the main one of Fábio Faria’s management in Bolsonaro’s Communications, was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in August 2021 by 286 votes in favor and 173 against. But since then it has been stalled in the Senate.

Still during the transition, when he announced Aloizio Mercadante for the presidency of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), Lula made a speech with harsh criticism of privatizations.

“There will be no rain, no sun, nothing in this world, unless God forbid me, to make this country smile again, make the people happy again, and believe that in this country the mongrel complex is over. We are not inferior. to anyone, we are equal to everyone and we want to be masters of our territory”, said the then graduated president.

“The privatizations will end in this country. They have already privatized almost everything, but it will end and we will prove that some public companies will be able to show their profitability”, completed Lula.
