Lula government wants to eliminate diseases linked to poverty – 06/06/2023 – Health

The Ministry of Health launched, this Tuesday (6), a group that will propose strategies for the elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, the virus that is passed from mother to child, and other diseases related to poverty.

The goal of Cieds (Interministerial Committee for the Elimination of Tuberculosis and Other Socially Determined Diseases) is that most of the problems be eliminated by 2030. The list includes Chagas disease, malaria, viral hepatitis, trachoma, filariasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis and geo -helminthiasis.

Malaria, for example, represents a major public health problem in the country, with 99% of cases concentrated in the Amazon region and with a higher incidence in populations with greater social vulnerability. This Tuesday, the folder incorporated tafenoquine, a single-dose medicine used to combat malaria by Plasmodium vivax, the most common type of disease in Brazil.

For HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B, the goal is to eliminate vertical transmission, that is, when the disease is passed from mother to child. In cases of tuberculosis and leprosy, the objective is to achieve the operational targets for reduction and control proposed by the WHO (World Health Organization) by 2030.

In tuberculosis, the goal is to reduce the incidence to less than 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and deaths to less than 230 per year. In 2022, around 78,000 people fell ill with tuberculosis in Brazil — an increase of 4.9% compared to 2021.

The goal of the Ministry of Health is to reach priority populations that are most vulnerable to these diseases, such as homeless people, people deprived of liberty, people living with HIV/AIDS, immigrants and indigenous communities.
