Meta, which owns Facebook, unveiled its own version of artificial intelligence (AI) on Friday and said it would give researchers access to the tool to help them find solutions to the technology’s potential risks.
Meta described its artificial intelligence, called LLaMA, as a “smaller, higher-performance” model designed to “help researchers advance their work”, in what could be considered a thinly-veiled criticism of Microsoft’s decision to release the technology widely. while keeping the programming code confidential.
Backed by Microsoft, ChatGPT has become a worldwide sensation for its ability to generate high-quality texts in seconds, such as essays and poems, using a technology known as large linguistic models (LLM).
Seeing a sudden threat to its search engine dominance, Google was quick to announce that it will launch its own linguistic AI, known as Bard. But reports of disturbing exchanges with Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, such as threats and desires to steal nuclear code, went viral, sounding warnings that the technology was not ready.
Meta indicated that these problems could be better remedied if researchers had more access to this expensive technology. OpenAI (creators of ChatGPT) and Microsoft limit access to the technology behind their chatbots, which draws criticism that they prefer potential profits over improving technology faster for society. “By sharing the LLaMA code, other researchers can more easily test new approaches to limit or eliminate these problems,” Meta pointed out.
