The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this Thursday (6) that he sought out former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the midst of the tax reform debate. The parliamentarian, however, says he has not received a response from the contact.
“I sent a message and was not answered. I did not call, I could not speak”, said Lira after being asked about the position of Bolsonaro’s party on the subject and the possible dialogue with the former president.
According to Lira, Bolsonaro’s PL did not close an issue against the proposal, but will forward (that is, recommend) the contrary vote.
Bolsonaro has positioned himself against the proposal and even fell out with the former minister and current governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), on the subject.
Lira also stated that there is no possibility of postponing the vote on the tax reform in the plenary of the House, scheduled to start at 6 pm.
“There is no possibility of postponing the vote. We understand that this topic is safe, it is widely discussed, there is no plausibility in the request for postponement. Whoever is raising this possibility, I don’t think will vote in favor of the topic either now or in August”, said upon arriving at the Chamber of Deputies.
“We have to give opportunity for the debate, we have to listen to everyone, we did, and we are going to take it to the plenary and wait for the democratic result of the parliamentarians. If there is a quorum, congratulations to everyone. If there is not, one more attempt that Brazil loses” , followed.
Lira also said that the vote should be completed on the same day and that he believes in the approval of the text. “If you have votes for the first round, you will have for the second.”
As it is a PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution), the matter needs the vote of 308 deputies in two rounds in the plenary of the Chamber to be approved and go to the Senate.
