LGBTI+ Pride Day: company reinforces commitment to diversity and respect

Manaus (AM) – Five years ago, when she joined the team of McDonald’s Attendants and got her first formal job, Tiana Machado still understood herself as a cis gay man. Some time later, she recognized herself as a trans woman and says that she received full support from her Unit Manager at the beginning of her transition process.

“Getting a job at McDonald’s was a great thing and finding myself inside too. If I discovered myself before, I think I would have difficulties to get any job”,

After two years as an attendant, opportunities for growth came and Tiana was promoted to Customer Experience Ambassador, being, a year later, promoted to Supervisor, the position she currently holds.

“When I realized myself as a trans person I thought it would be difficult, but it wasn’t. I never thought I would be so welcome in a company as I am today. I have the name rectified on all documents. Badge, time mirror, exams, everything has my social name“, account. “I don’t see myself leaving Méqui. I see myself growing even more”, she adds.

Welcoming, recognizing and valuing LGBTI+ employees are part of the commitments of Arcos Dorados, the company that operates the McDonald’s brand in 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, as it operates under the Cooltura of Service, philosophy that promotes respect for individualities and encourages each person to feel free to express themselves freely and as they identify.

Since the creation of SOMOS, the Diversity & Inclusion committee, and the Arcos Pride Network, an LGBTI+ affinity group, Arcos Dorados has taken important steps in this direction, even though there is a long journey.

The company recently updated its Sexual Diversity Guide, which provides guidelines for promoting a respectful work environment and combating discrimination, and became a signatory to the Forum for Companies and LGBTI+ Rights. Still, through an internal census, the company mapped that more than 8,700 employees are LGBTI+ and more than 850 people are trans.

Currently, the company has a series of practical inclusion actions, such as the creation of non-binary uniforms (without gender distinction); adoption of a social name independent of civil registration, both for restaurant and office employees; bathroom use according to gender identity; equality in selection processes and promotions, which contributed to the fact that 15% of leaders declared themselves LGBTI+ in the last census; in addition to the “Safe and Respectful Place Policy” and the Ethics Line, a reporting channel that also works in cases of sexual discrimination.

Several other internal actions related to the Diversity and Inclusion agenda are also promoted in the company, such as training, literacy and awareness that contribute to the personal and professional development of each person. These and other initiatives take place in line with the zero tolerance policy adopted by the company with regard to discriminatory conduct based on gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression and any other prejudiced nature.
