Lecture on ‘Urban Archeology’ will open activities of the program ‘Living Our Center’

Manaus (AM) – Inaugurating the heritage education actions of the “Nosso Centro” program, the City Hall of Manaus, via the Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (Implurb), will promote, on 8/5, from 8 am to 12 pm, the lecture “Urban Archeology”, with the archaeologist and PhD in Society and Culture in the Amazon, Carlos Augusto da Silva, at Casarão da Inovação Cassina, Centro, south zone.

The lecture inaugurates the “Living Our Center” program, promoting experiences, experiences of immersion in the city and heritage education, which will continue with an in loco visit circuit in the area of ​​São Vicente Island, in the “Old Center”, South zone , where the City Hall carries out a series of urban rehabilitation interventions. The event will also feature the participation of archaeologist Mick Jone Nogueira de Almeida, who carries out archaeological follow-up on interventions at “Nosso Centro”.

Born in Manaquiri (AM), Carlos Augusto is of indigenous origin, graduated in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) and has extensive experience in the field of archeology in the Amazon.

“I’m going to approach Amazonian archeology, within social science, working on the impact of that society today in urban areas. Talk about how this archeology is the product of human action in the ancient Amazon and how this action modified, transformed and created new landscapes. And among these landscapes, in my view, it is composed of some scientific categories, including the forest”,

advanced the speaker.

For the archaeologist, the forest is perhaps a ramification today, an identity with the fingerprints of these peoples who lived in the past. Within the archeology of the Amazon, Silva is considered one of the pioneers in the rescue of the famous millennial funerary urns already found in the interior of the Amazon and in the capital.

Melissa Toledo, the manager of Historic Heritage at Implurb and responsible for the program’s heritage education actions, architect and urbanist, says that when it comes to archeology, there are classifications of it from prehistory to architecture and urban planning.

“This is studying the relationships between material culture, urban behavior and cognition in an urban settlement. The lecture has experienced archaeologists opening a moment of heritage education to experience ‘Our Center’, and that is more than important. In fact, it is discussing, presenting, provoking reflection in the community, because we are dealing with our first archaeological site, the urban fragment of study and implementation, of urban rehabilitation through the Lúcia Almeida viewpoint, the Thiago de Mello mansion and the square of San Vicente,

The program shows the concern and commitment of David Almeida’s management with the licensing policy and set of mechanisms for the preservation of built historical heritage and the delicacy in looking at the cultural complex of Manaus, with the monitoring of archeology.

Program

The “Living Our Center” circuit will have eight days of scheduled visits, with a maximum duration of four hours, with pre-registered groups for a heritage, cultural and educational tour of spaces in the capital, on Saturdays, from 8am to 12pm, in the months August, September, October and November.

For those interested in participating in the program, the Historical Heritage Management (GPH) team will disclose, 15 days before, a link for registration, which will be free. The idea is to form groups of up to 25 people. At the end of each visit, participants will receive a complementary extracurricular activity certificate.

The idea is to carry out the urban heritage education project for civil society groups and academics, accompanied by technicians and professionals from Implurb and invited and involved secretariats, with support from the Technical Commission for the Implementation and Revitalization of the Historic Center of Manaus.

The revitalization, requalification and regeneration of the Historic Center of Manaus focuses on the best use of the central region, a place that holds valuable cultural and heritage wealth. “Our Center” aims at the economic rescue of the area, involving actions in the economy, tourism, history, entrepreneurship, culture, art and housing.
