New Year’s Eve in Brazil is surrounded by superstitions, jumping seven waves, wearing new clothes, wearing white, and others that depend on the family and the region. Even the dishes that make up the supper have a mystical dimension. For those who want renewal, it is believed that the chicken should be left aside at dinner, as the hen scratches backwards. The preference is for pigs (an animal that “swipes” forward) or fish (does not swim backwards). In the world of legumes and side dishes, lentils are a popular choice among the various food traditions present on the holiday. There are even those who consume the grain only on this day because of its superstitious value.
The tradition of preparing lentils at New Year’s Eve was imported from Italy and arrived in Brazil by Italian immigrants who settled, especially, in the South and Southeast of the country. At supper, lentils are associated with financial prosperity and abundance – some even call the dish “Lentils of Fortune”. The reason for this meaning is the shape of the seeds, which resemble coins. To celebrate Brazilian dinner traditions for New Year’s Eve, we invited chef Fernanda Zacarias, who runs Ragú Rotisseria, in Curitiba.
The recipe, whose protagonist is lentils, also contains bacon and pepperoni. For the superstitious, this is a lucky recipe that combines two happy ingredients in one. Lentils for the New Year

Ingredients
- 2 cups of lentils
- 100 g diced bacon
- 100g pepperoni, cubed or sliced
- 1 onion
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 1.5 liters of water
- 4 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Lentil
- Peel and chop the onion and garlic. Place a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- When heated, drizzle with olive oil and fry the bacon and pepperoni well.
- Add the onion, season with a pinch of salt and sauté until it starts to brown. Add the garlic, bay leaf, cumin and stir for 1 minute to perfume.
- Add the lentils, season with salt and pepper.
- Add water and mix well to dissolve the flavors of the stew. Let it cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes until it starts to boil.
- Lower the heat and partially cover the pan.
- Let it cook for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are soft and the broth is slightly thickened.
- Taste and adjust the salt.
