As the deadline for declaring the 2023 Income Tax is approaching, the subject has become a meme on social media. On Twitter, the Income Tax lion went viral in a video about thin knits.

Symbol of the IR created by advertisers in the late 1970s, the animal, which “is tame but not silly”, is the terror of some older taxpayers, who associate it with the bite that the tax takes on the budget, but it is unknown to young people.

One day before the deadline, more than 2 million had not yet sent the declaration to the Federal Revenue. Those who are obliged to declare and are late pay a minimum fine of R$ 165.74, which can reach 20% of the tax due for the year. The Revenue has already received a record number of statements: 37 million by 8 pm this Tuesday (30), surpassing the 36.3 million received last year.

“For [sic] who doesn’t know, that’s what happens to those who fall into the fine mesh”, said one of the most commented and liked tweets about the IR which, at 5:30 pm, had more than 33 thousand likes.

The promises made at the beginning of the year by some internet users included not leaving the income tax return to the last minute this year, but, like most Brazilians, the taxpayer failed.

Aslan, the mighty lion from the novel “The Chronicles of Narnia”, by CS Lewis, well represented the lion of the IR for new generations to understand how the tax authorities work. “I’ll keep an eye on you always,” he says.

Those who made the IR declaration for the first time alone believe that the Revenue will be surprised. And it won’t necessarily be a positive surprise.

When it comes to declaring the income tax, there are those who want to go back to adolescence.

And there are those who were organized, anticipated and declared the IR on the first day of the deadline. For this taxpayer, who called himself “anxious”, there is a reward: he will receive the refund this Wednesday (31), in the first batch.
