In a brief Japanese-language statement, Shinchosha said the new novel will be published on April 13, without revealing its title or plot details. The book will initially be published in Japanese. A source at the publisher told Agence France Presse that he could not confirm when the translations of the work will be published or when its title will be announced. Murakami is an author of great international recognition who has been nominated as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. The 74-year-old writer has a cult following for his surreal work peppered with references to popular culture and translated into some 50 languages. In “Murakami’s world”, giant frogs challenge men to battle and mackerels fall from the sky. A library of his novels, scrapbooks and vinyl records opened in 2021 at Tokyo’s Waseda University, complete with a replica of the author’s minimalist workspace, a cafe and a radio studio. For the release of “The Assassination of the Commander”, Tokyo bookstores were open until the early hours so that fans could buy the book immediately. Plot details for that novel were kept secret to respect Murakami’s wish that “readers discover it without knowing anything beforehand”, Shinchosha said at the time.
