Japan temporarily suspended the importation of poultry from Santa Catarina, after the state confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (IAAP), this Monday (17). The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) stated that the focus was identified in Maracajá, in the south of the state. Mapa reported that the cases were confirmed on Saturday (15), in subsistence poultry on a property that raised several species, such as chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys. The birds where the outbreak was identified were raised loose and were not intended for the production of products for sale, according to Mapa. According to the ministry, the property was interdicted. All birds diagnosed with the disease were slaughtered, the carcasses destroyed and buried. The Brazilian government said the cases do not compromise Brazil’s status as an IAAP-free country. Even so, Japan decided to suspend imports of live poultry and poultry meat from Santa Catarina until it receives more details about the outbreak. A ministry delegation is due to meet with Japanese officials next week to discuss the case. SC confirms first outbreak of avian flu in domesticated poultry
