To be eligible, an artist must have released their first album or single 25 years or more ago. Missy Elliot and the White Stripes were nominated in their first possible year, as they debuted in 1998. This is the first nomination for Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon.
