There is also an “extended indicator”, which includes those who, for some reason, stated that they did not use the internet during the period, but who declared the use of applications that require a connection. Using this criterion, the number rises to 164 million, or 88% of the population aged 10 or over. The South (88%) and Southeast (87%) regions had the highest rates of internet use. And the most connected age group in the country is 16 to 24 years old, with 95% of the population accessing the network in the period analyzed by the study. When breaking down by race, 86% of white people used the network, while the rate is 85% for brown people and 82% for black people. And who are the disconnected? The group of people who did not use the internet during the period analyzed is mainly made up of men, black or mixed race, aged 60 or over. The research indicates that, for the most part, those who are disconnected have education up to primary school and are part of economic classes D and E. In addition to the growth in internet use, the survey showed a decrease in the group that accesses the network only via cell phone. According to the coordinator of TIC Domicílios 2023, Fabio Storino, the reasons for this movement are not yet clear, but the change can be considered positive. “When we cross-reference the indicators of activities carried out on the internet and digital skills with the access device, we notice a big difference in the use of digital opportunities by those who access the network exclusively via cell phone”, he states. “Academic research also associates the use of multiple devices with greater development of digital skills,” he continues. The survey began to highlight the “expanded indicator” of internet use, which includes those who said they had not used the network, but who declared having used services that require this connection, such as messaging applications and social networks. “The reasons for this [a resposta contraditória] are diverse, ranging from lack of technical knowledge (not knowing whether or not they use the internet) to the fact that some users of prepaid plans understand that sponsored applications (zero-rated) ‘do not use’ the internet on their plan”, said Storino .
