Indigenous artist from Manaus has work on display at the National History Museum

The work portrays the Ayuasca ritual in the cosmology of the Dessana people, originally from the Upper Rio Negro

Manaus (AM) – Since February 9, indigenous artist Jaime Diakara Dessana has his work on display at the National Historical Museum, in Rio de Janeiro, in the long-term exhibition: “Îandé – here we were, here we are”. Jaime also participated in the Indigenous Art Show, by the Manaus City Hall.

The artist of the people, Dessana, participated in the two editions of the indigenous exhibition of Manaus, carried out by the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), through the Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura), in the years 2021 and 2022.

For the president of Concultura, Tenório Telles, all artistic achievement is ingrained in the culture and deepest memory of a people.

“Thus, the artist, when creating his work, invests it with those elements that form the basis of his history and his view of the world. Jaime Diakara’s painting is a representation of the identity and symbolic universe of the Dessana people. His creation expresses the immemorial and mythological aspects of his people, with special emphasis on the cosmogony of the desana. He interprets Diakara’s painting as a journey through his ancestry and original myths”, explained Telles.

The show’s curators are indigenous Denilson Baniwa and MHN researcher André Amud Botelho, who is also from Amazonas.

“We, as a museum of Brazilian history, want more and more to open up to other and diverse Brazilian histories. One way to do this is through art. The power of Diakara’s work also allows us to reflect on the stories of his people and, in general, on the historical and cultural protagonism of indigenous peoples in Brazil”, he emphasized.

Jaime Diakara said that his work entitled Gaapi Pahti – ayahuasca’s cosmic body, an 80cm x 60cm painting, acrylic on canvas, portrays the Ayuasca ritual in the cosmology of its desana people, originally from the Upper Rio Negro.

“I show how ayuasca opens up access to the spiritual world, based on my master’s thesis, I show the ritual of drinking the drink, access to knowledge of indigenous philosophy, knowledge of dances, songs, rites and rituals. blessings”, he highlighted.

Exhibition

The exhibition features an archaeological, artistic and cultural collection focused on the history and culture of Brazilian indigenous peoples. The National Historical Museum started, on Thursday (9), the long-term exhibition “Îandé – here we were, here we are”, which addresses the trajectory of the original Brazilian peoples from before the arrival of the Portuguese to the present day. The exhibition is free and open from Wednesday to Friday, from 10 am to 5 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays, it is open from 13:00 to 17:00.

The inauguration began with the conversation circle “Indigenous memories and museums”, which included representatives of the Kanindé (CE) and Yawanawá (AC) peoples, followed by a cultural presentation also in the exhibition space, and even an indigenous art fair.

Indigenous artists, such as Denilson Baniwa, Diakara Dessana, Mayra Karvalho and Tapixi Guajajara, are also present at the exhibition with their own works.

The exhibition takes ethnographic objects to the public, such as the club, which belonged to the indigenous leader Tibiriçá in the 16th century, and a necklace used in contemporary Yawanaw rituals, and is divided into two thematic axes: Archeology and Native Peoples.
