Participation of athletes seeks financial support for the construction of the center that aims to strengthen sport among indigenous youth

To realize the dream of building an Archery Training Center in an indigenous community in the Amazon and strengthen the sport among young people, the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS) and the indigenous archers and brothers, Graziela and Gustavo Santos, will face the wall of The Wall, part of the program Domingão com Huck, next Sunday, this Sunday (18).

Indigenous Archery is a project coordinated by FAS in partnership with the Amazon Archery Federation (Fatarco). The objective is to directly contribute and support the promotion and strengthening of the culture, image and self-esteem of indigenous populations in Amazonas. Created in 2013, young indigenous people have already won 53 medals, 34 national and 19 international. Of the total, 20 were gold medals, 17 silver and 16 bronze.

Currently, the project has four supported athletes and is looking for financiers. “It was a milestone for my life and for the indigenous people, as I was the first indigenous person to represent Brazil in the Pan American Games and world championships,” said athlete Graziela Santos.

According to Globo, The Wall has a potential reach of 35 million people and FAS’s expectation is that, through this highlight, it will be possible to achieve investments to support young indigenous athletes who want to develop professional sports practices, combining traditional knowledge with the greatest achievement of sporting life, the Olympics. The program starts at 5pm (Manaus time) on the Globo channel (Rede Amazônica) and also on Globoplay.

The goal is to build the Archery Training Center, which costs R$400,000, in the Nova Kuanã community, within the Puranga Conquista Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), on the lower Rio Negro. In October, the program team made recordings in this community, which is located in the rural area of ​​Manaus (AM). According to FAS Indigenous Agenda supervisor, Rosa dos Anjos, it is symbolic and strategic to build a professional training space within an indigenous community, as it facilitates logistics and brings them close to their traditions and families.

“FAS works in communities, giving a voice to traditional populations, seeking to know what their needs are, before starting a project anywhere. And the proposal to build the training center within the indigenous community is one of those requests from the athletes themselves. There, they are close to their families, have contact with nature and their customs. In addition, of course, they do not need to travel to the capital to train, which generates costs that they are not always able to maintain”, explained Rosa.

The superintendent of Sustainable Community Development at FAS, Valcléia Solidade, states that this is an opportunity to show the institution’s work in caring for the people who take care of the forest.

“The Domingão com Huck program provides space for many highly relevant works in Brazil and around the world and we are happy to be able to talk about the work we have been doing for 16 years. Seeing indigenous archery receiving this spotlight on national television is something that leaves us ecstatic. Our intention is to raise awareness among people who are interested in investing in sport and who see these athletes as future world powers. Grazi and Gustavo who were with us on the program are examples, indigenous people from communities in Amazonas, who gained professional training and, today, compete in world championships, with chances of reaching the Olympics”,

he emphasized.

“The Wall” is characterized by a mixed dynamic of questions and answers and luck, where participants, in pairs, need to answer general knowledge questions. If you get the answers right, the wall turns green, if you get the questions wrong, the wall turns red. Participants choose numbers from 1 to 7 on the famous wall for the balls to be thrown. When choosing the numbers, the balls fall in values ​​ranging from R$1 to R$150 thousand.
