The deadline to declare the IR ends at 23:59 on May 31st. Those who are required to render accounts and miss the deadline pay a minimum fine of R$ 165.74, which can reach 20% of the tax due for the year.

The program for completing and sending the Income Tax declaration can be downloaded from the Federal Revenue website. There is also the option of declaring the IR through the My Income Tax application or through the e-CAC (Virtual Service Center of the Federal Revenue Service).

Taxpayers can choose to pre-populate the declaration, import data from the previous year’s declaration if they fill it out on the same computer as last year, or start a new declaration from scratch.

The information to be sent deserves care and is the responsibility of the citizen. Even in cases where they are already pre-filled by the Recipe, errors can occur that lead to a fine mesh.

The Income Tax declaration is a system of rendering accounts in which the taxpayer informs his/her income for the year, whether taxable —such as salary and retirement— or exempt, such as the FGTS (Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço), and declare your expenses, your assets and investments.

After filling in the information, the program calculates whether there is tax to be paid, right to refund or zero tax. Those who are going to refund enter one of the five payment batches from May to September. The first of them is released on May 31 and serves priority taxpayers.
