A special g1 series, ‘Where do I eat from,’ took the road to Jaboticabal (SP) to show the planting and harvesting process and explains why the food is so popular in the city. Where peanuts come from Peanuts are a show of versatility, but that’s not all that sets them apart. Originally from Bolivia, the “minduim” — as it is affectionately called by some people — is born underground, is very nutritious, manages to enrich the soil and goes well in sweet and savory dishes. There are people who eat peanuts in pasta, rice and even as a smoothie, mixing paçoca with milk. All of these curiosities g1 discovered in Jaboticabal, a city in the interior of São Paulo that was elected the “Peanut capital” in 2018. Watch the video above. Learn more about grain culture 🌱 Planting: it is done between September and October, while harvesting takes place once a year: in February and March. The producers take turns planting with the sugarcane crop; see in the video above why the combination worked so well. 🥜 Harvest: the process is all mechanized. Still in the field, a first machine pulls the plant out of the ground to “invert” the peanuts. They stay in the sun for about three days before going to processing. A second machine separates the peanut from the plant, then harvesting it. 🏭 Improvement: After leaving the field, they go with shell and everything to the cooperative, Coplana. There, they can be processed into roasted, skinless, paste peanuts. A good part goes to the foreign market, to be consumed in snacks and chocolates, for example.
