In the month of Carnival, Teatro Amazonas opens the curtains for the trickery

Originally written in the 18th century (1728) by the Englishman John Gay, with the title Opera dos Mendigos, the work was a satire on the “New Era”
Ópera do Malandro, a classic Brazilian theater musical, written by Chico Buarque de Holanda in the 70s, at the height of the military dictatorship in Brazil, arrives at Teatro Amazonas, in a 100% cabocla production, in the middle of Carnival – the 17th and February 18th –, under the supervision and command of Casa de Artes Trilhares. The story has crossed centuries, continents, changed structures and ways of being told to the public, but maintains the main focus: social criticism of a corrupted society.
Originally written in the 18th century (1728) by the Englishman John Gay, with the title Beggars’ Opera, the work was a satire on the “New Era”, where wealth and ruin went hand in hand. Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill created a new version, with the Threepenny Opera (1928), bringing to the stage a pioneering piece in aesthetic innovation and introducing music as a central element of the bourgeois universe.
Chico Buarque was inspired by Brecht’s work, but his characters identify with Gay’s, where crime (underworld) and the law (the social elite) coexist in a parallel universe of complicity.
“We follow the script written by Chico Buarque, which brings us the reality of Rio’s rogues in the 40s. Amidst the romance between Max, the great Rio smuggler, and Teresinha, daughter of the biggest pimp in Lapa, stories intersect from a timeless perspective , portraying prostitution, smuggling, loan sharking, robbery, political, economic and social interests, issues that we still see and live with”,
explains the play’s director, Dávilla Holanda.
The Amazon production, the second made by Trilhares, of Ópera do Malandro, involves more than 40 people on stage and off. The director says that the show presents a crude vision of the present day, like Brecht, through exaggeration. “The idea is that it becomes socially open, through the performance and the elements that will compose it. Where beauty is not always that beautiful,” she highlights.
More than 50 years after being performed for the first time, Opera do Malandro continues to arouse interest and curiosity. The activation on social media promoted by Trilhares generated more than 30 thousand views in two days of publication. “This shows that the public is interested”, says the company’s director, Rafaela Guimarães.
Trails
Casa de Artes Trilhares has been operating in the city for almost 9 years and its main characteristic is training activities and large shows that offer experiences between cast and audience, as a means of strengthening and encouraging more and more people to attend the theater.
Although it has great musicals in its portfolio, Casa de Artes Trilhares maintains numerous other productions.
“There are productions that speak to the general public and big brands and it is through them that we dialogue so that others are also considered and given prestige”,
says Rafaela Guimarães.
