In ‘The Killer’, David Fincher elevates the grim script with a perfect role for Michael Fassbender; g1 already seen

With a protagonist who seems to have been made to order for the half-snobbish, half-dangerous charm of Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”), the film opens this Thursday (26th) in Brazilian cinemas – and on the 10th on Netflix – proves that he believes in the slogan that illustrates his posters: “Execution is everything.” Watch the trailer for ‘The Killer’ Crutch as a weapon Written by Andrew Kevin Walker (who worked with Fincher on “Seven”), the script for “The Killer” is based on the French comic of the same name by Matz and Luc Jacamon – and chooses a path so obvious that it is not even possible to consider an adaptation. Both works follow professional killers accustomed to the isolation of their careers who have to deal with their own contractors after a failed job. It’s a shame that the film’s delicious beginning doesn’t live up to the expectations it creates. The first part dedicates long minutes to the internal dialogues of the protagonist (Fassbender), as he spends days waiting for a target. Some may turn up their noses at the apparent narration. Many think the feature should almost be banned. But the Irish actor’s detached interpretation, accompanied by the beautiful images and the casual rhythm maintained by the director, put the audience inside his head. It even gives hope for an entire film with the character’s opinions and personal ethics, so disconnected from the cruelty of his actions. Unfortunately, with the exception of a few glimpses into the killer’s distorted vision, the optimism doesn’t last. Shortly after, the story adopts the old formula of the man who kills to protect an attacked woman (the Brazilian Sophie Charlotte, in a quick but competent participation) – this, yes, a cliché that should be murdered and buried. And what follows never gets more original. But in this case, execution is everything. The director maintains the tension even with a predictable plot by focusing on silences and expectations postponed as much as possible, very close to breaking the limit. A lesson in rhythm and control from one of the best in the game. To be fair, to the soundtrack of songs by the Smiths, a band that must be the character’s favorite, everything becomes easier too, but Fincher goes further. After becoming known for the surprising plots of “Seven” (1995) and his 1999 masterpiece (let’s ignore “Alien 3”), the director even embarked on more realistic stories, such as “The Social Network ” (2010) or “Mank” (2020), but nothing as commonplace as “The Killer”. It’s as if at some point he decided to prove that anything can be good in the right hands. And prove it. Before continuing, it is worth a small side reflection, however. As much as he is celebrated by many as a great actor, and indeed he is, what a dark phase Fassbender was going through in his career until 2023. “Dark Phoenix” (2019) was terrible. “Snowman”, horror (2017). “Alien: Covenant” (2017), very weak. “From song to song” (2017), below average for director Terrence Malick. “Assassin’s Creed” (2016), one of the worst game adaptations ever made. Hopefully, working with two great filmmakers – his next film, “The Doer Wins” is directed by Taika Waititi – will get him back on track. Since he stood out as the infiltrated British soldier in “Inglourious Basterds” (2009), the actor has built a reputation with eccentric characters or those with questionable morals (the Oscar nominations for “Steve Jobs” and “12 Years a Slave” say so ). With Fincher, he manages to combine the two things and add a little of his characteristic charm, a snobbish air that always keeps him slightly above average humans. A good script is often the basis of a great film. In “The Killer”, actor and director prove that rules have exceptions – and that execution can be everything.
