In fact, the animation that takes inspiration from Miyazaki’s childhood and revisits his work is so stunning that it overcomes, or at least masks, the confusing and unstable ending – with long tired moments and abrupt transitions. A rapturous ending moves and delivers a necessary contained catharsis – as well as a young boy’s realization that it is time to mature, which does not mean that the past needs to be forgotten.
