The target audience are students from the 6th to the 9th year of Elementary School II and students from the 1st year of High School
Manaus (AM) – The Basic Mathematics School project is an Extension Curricular Activity and consists of offering mathematics classes to students from the public school system in Manaus, with the aim of creating a space for practice as a curricular component for students of the degree course in Mathematics and contribute to improving the school performance of public school students who have difficulties in Mathematics.
The first edition of this project took place in 2019 and this year it presents an innovative proposal that is the planning and application of tasks based on the Mathematical Mentalities approach, which is based on the studies of research professors Jo Boaler, Rachel Lotan and Elizabeth Cohen, all from Stanford University, bringing together references from the fields of neuroscience, educational psychology and mathematics education.
The Mathematical Mentalities approach is composed of strategies to work with mathematics in a connected way, inside and outside the classroom, encouraging mathematical investigation and its different possibilities of resolution. To do so, it relies on activities with low floors and high ceilings, with content proposals that activate different parts of the brain, thus promoting more synapses (junctions between the termination of a neuron and the membrane of another neuron).
One of the main assumptions of Mathematical Mentalities, based on science, points out that everyone can learn math at high levels. The purpose is to promote deep and meaningful learning, empowering students as protagonists of the learning process, through more open, creative, visual and equitable mathematics.
The target audience is students from the 6th to the 9th year of Elementary School II and students from the 1st year of High School. Classes will be taught by academics from the Mathematics Degree course in the morning and supervised by the project coordinators: professors Francisco Eteval da Silva Feitosa, Ana Acácia Pereira Valente and Yachiko Nascimento Wakiyama, all from the Department of Mathematics at Ufam.
Classes will take place at the Institute of Exact Sciences, North sector, of the Ufam Campus, from 8am to 12pm. The project caters exclusively to public school students.
