In India and the US, there is talk of a ‘Deng moment’ for Modi – 06/20/2023 – Nelson de Sá

Writing in the Indian Express, foreign policy columnist C Raja Mohan, a professor at the National University of Singapore, advocated a “Deng Xiaoping moment” (below) for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he begins yet another visit to the US.

The Indian leader “can emulate the former Chinese leader by taking advantage of the geoeconomic possibilities opened up by Joe Biden’s policies”. In the 1970s and 80s, “Deng transformed the Chinese economy with access to Western capital, technology and markets.”

For now, however, what we have is the promise of “collaboration in the defense industry”, hence the image having echoed more in Russia, India’s partner in defense. An article on the RT website warned that the global picture “is far removed from the time of the visionary Chinese leader”.

In the US, under the heading “India as it is”, Foreign Affairs reported that “Washington and New Delhi share interests, not values”, and the justification for the partnership, “democratic values, is clearly condemned”. It questions India’s very “status as a democracy”.

And it goes back to “Richard Nixon’s overture” to Deng’s China. In the face of Modi’s “increasingly undemocratic” government, Biden “must treat India as he treats Vietnam and other illiberal partners, in other words, he must cooperate based on the reality of interests.”

THE ART OF VASSALAGE

For two days at the top of the most read texts, the English Financial Times published that “Europe has lagged behind the US and the gap is growing”, from the fall in production to energy costs.

Then, in the Taiwanese Lianhe Bao, the “big three of TSMC”, the main executives of the largest chipmaker in the world, traveled to Shanghai “to visit important customers” and present the advances in 2nm and 3nm technology. And the Korea Herald reported that South Korean manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix are now pushing for the exemption of US export controls for their operations in China to be indefinite.
