The performance of the Brazilian economy may have been better than expected in 2022 and the expectation of GDP growth for this year has increased, according to forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released this Tuesday morning (31).

The agency estimates that the Brazilian GDP grew 3.1% last year. The forecast in October was 2.8%. The signal for the expansion of the national economy in 2023 increased from 1.0% to 1.2%. But for 2024, the outlook has worsened: growth expectations dropped from 1.9% to 1.5%.

The number for 2023 is better than the latest financial market projections, raised by the Focus bulletin, from the Central Bank (BC). The midpoint (median) of expectations for GDP growth in 2023 are at 0.8%. And for 2024, by 1.5%.

The fund also released its new projections for the global economy and, according to “Bloomberg”, sees this year as a turning point, by raising, for the first time in a year, growth expectations for the world economy. The projection points to an expansion of 2.9% in 2023, 0.2 percentage points more than in October, motivated by the resilience of the US economy and the reopening of the Chinese economy.
