Iguaçu Falls: 10 waterfalls to visit in Brazil – 04/19/2023 – Tourism

Every time the bed of a river, when encountering an unevenness, produces a waterfall, a scenario appears capable of disconnecting the mind and recharging the batteries. No wonder, it is the waterfalls that inaugurate the series of reports from Sheet which list unmissable places to visit in Brazil, published weekly starting this Thursday (20).

The selection brings attractions from different corners of the country, including options that can be visited in short car trips or the most hidden and difficult to access. See list below.

End Life Waterfall

Almost 90 km west of the city of Barreiras, known as the capital of western Bahia, is located a waterfall that enchants by the volume of water tearing through the dense vegetation. The 36-meter drop over the bed full of stones favors the appearance of rainbows, famous among visitors. Just below, there is the formation of a shallow well, ideal for bathing. It is also worth checking out the waterfall of
Redondo, a sister attraction located on the same river, 25 km away from the first fall.

Smoke Waterfall

With a drop of an incredible 340 meters, the water from this waterfall, one of the most famous in the country, dissipates into the air before reaching the ground. The spectacle is easier to see from above, at 1,350 meters above sea level. A light trail, about 6 km long, takes you there, starting from the Capão valley, 22 km from the center of the municipality of Palmeiras, host city of the Chapada Diamantina National Park. On the outskirts of the valley, natural pools allow for a dip —since the Fumaça waterfall is so grand that it cannot be bathed.

enchanted waterfall

In addition to the waterfall at the bottom of the Grotão canyon, south of Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, the trail that leads to it draws attention, with large walls up to 300 meters high, capuchin monkeys jumping between buritis and pools natural to cool off. Still little visited, the waterfall is close to the municipality of Itaeté. From there, it’s a 35km road to the Baixão Settlement, from where
a 6 km trail. Hiring a guide is recommended.

Santa Barbara Waterfall

On the outskirts of the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, this waterfall is close to the village of Engenho 2, in Quilombo Kalunga, 27 km from Cavalcante, in Goiás. It is among the most sought after in the region, thanks to the blue of the waters, which guarantee diving and photos, especially between April and October, when it does not rain. To get there, you need to buy a ticket (R$ 55), hire a quilombola guide at the Tourist Service Center in the village (from R$ 200, shared by up to six people) and walk a 14 km round trip trail. —which can also be made from macaw wood (R$20). On busier days, visitation time may be limited to one hour.

Waterfalls of Dragons

In Pirenópolis, Goiás, this set of waterfalls is inside the Zen Buddhist monastery Eishō-ji. There are eight falls, accessible by a circular trail of 4.5 km – in at least half of them it is possible to swim. As the flow of visitors is controlled, it is possible to enjoy the tour (from R$30 to R$60) without large crowds.

Waterfall of Tabuleiro

The highest in Minas Gerais and one of the largest in the country, at 273 meters, this waterfall is located in a rock formation that resembles a heart, one of the charms of the tour. Leaving from the headquarters of the Parque Natural Municipal do Tabuleiro, 22 km from Conceição do Mato Dentro, known as the ecotourism capital of Minas Gerais, the trails lead to the waterfall’s viewpoint, to its well (where it is possible to take a bath) and to the top of the waterfall. d’água —from where you can see the entire path and the Serra do Cipó. The park charges admission (R$ 10) and limits access to 450 visitors per day.

Nascentes das Gerais Waterfall

In the municipality of Sacramento (MG), just over two hours by car from Franca (SP), the attraction combines a drop of 83 meters with a bathing well that resembles a small beach, sandy and sunny for most of the day. The trail to get there is about 1 km from the entrance to a private property, where there is a restaurant, chalets for lodging and camping. Entrance costs R$30.

Window of the Sky Waterfall

Of all the attractions in the Ibitipoca State Park, 94 km from Juiz de Fora (MG), this is the most difficult to access. Between round trips, there are 16 km of trail covered in six to eight hours, passing through peaks, caves and small waterfalls. Upon reaching Janela do Céu, everything seems to be worth it: before the 30-meter drop, the water forms a small water mirror that reflects the landscape. It is recommended to schedule
the visit (R$ 30), since the number of visitors is limited.

Santo Izidro Waterfall

Within the Serra da Bocaina National Park, close to the border between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, this waterfall has a drop of 50 meters. Amidst the dense vegetation of the Atlantic forest, its waters fall into a huge natural pool — perfect for swimming, but which gets cold in the coldest seasons. The 1.5 km walk from the park entrance to the waterfall is part of the Gold Trail, an 18th century stone path that connects São José do Barreiro (SP), at the top of the mountain, to Angra dos Reis (RJ).

The largest set of waterfalls in the world deserves any superlative title. It’s easy to get wet just walking along the walkways, but to leave with a refreshed soul, it’s worth taking the boat trip that passes under one of the waterfalls. On the Brazilian side, the park ticket costs R$75, and the boat ride starts at R$240.
