Manaus (AM) – In order to combat gastroschisis, a malformation that affects the fetus, preventing the complete closure of the abdominal wall, the Instituto de Saúde da Criança do Amazonas (Icam), a unit linked to the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), carried out this Monday (31), an activity alluding to the day of awareness of the congenital condition, highlighted last Sunday (30).

“I would like to congratulate the entire multidisciplinary team for promoting this initiative, without them it would not be possible to serve all the children in Amazonas. Despite the adversities we encounter on a daily basis, we managed to achieve our goals, which is to promote health”,

highlighted the Deputy Executive Secretary for Urgency and Emergency Care (SEAAUE), Luan Pedroza.

The unit set up a reception and celebration structure for children who were diagnosed with the disease and after treatment were discharged from the hospital. With a children’s decoration and a great mobilization, the children had activities such as bounce house, body painting, children’s entertainers, coffee break, release of balloons and other activities.

In addition, ten children were selected to receive the “I beat Gastroschisis” medal, which aimed to highlight the success of the treatment.

The director of the unit, Patrícia Carvalho recalled that the importance of the event is to show that despite the disease being rare, it has a cure and that the institute is a reference in the treatment of the disease.

“We held this event to raise awareness of the rarity of gastroschisis, a condition for which there is a treatment and cure. It is also worth highlighting that Icam is a reference throughout the state for the treatment of this disease and is the only place where surgery is performed to correct this condition”,

highlighted Patricia Carvalho.

Kelrem Rodrigues is the mother of one of the children who received the medal, and reported that she discovered her baby’s condition during pregnancy.

“At the age of seven months, I started to feel severe pain and went to the maternity ward, when I got there and performed the ultrasound, I discovered that my daughter had this condition and was underweight. From then on, I started to receive the necessary care and after the birth my baby spent about 19 days in the ICU, where she also had to undergo two surgeries ”,

said excitedly.

It is worth noting that discovering gastroschisis during pregnancy is essential for planning delivery and immediate care. This allows proper surgical intervention and better chances of treatment, avoiding complications and ensuring health for the baby.

Also in the afternoon shift, a symposium was held for civil servants and directors of other units, which had the objective of setting up a management protocol so that the incidence of deaths is reduced, in addition to promoting the exchange of experiences among professionals.

The cause of gastroschisis is still not well defined, but what is known is that it is a malformation that occurs in the first weeks of pregnancy. The diagnosis must be made by ultrasound during the prenatal period, so that the pregnant woman is properly guided about her baby’s illness.
