‘How to fight fake news?’: The most searched questions about fake news in Brazil in the last 12 months | fact or fake

These are some of the most searched questions about fake news and with the highest growth in demand on Google in the last 12 months, points out an exclusive survey by Google Trends published by g1 this Sunday (2) — the date on which the International Checking Day is celebrated.
The survey shows that:
- Fake news searches rose 30% in Brazil in the last 12 months compared to the same period before.
- Searches increased mainly between September and November of last year, a period marked by the elections.
- Searches for Fato ou Fake, Grupo Globo’s initiative to check false messages, doubled (+100%) in Brazil in the same period.
- Search interest in “fact checking” also rose during this period in Brazil: the increase was more than 40%.
Data from Google Trends also indicate that Election campaigns and certain moments of the Covid-19 pandemic were the periods with the most searches for the subject of “fake news” at Google in Brazil since 2004, the beginning of the historical series. October 2018 was the month with the highest search interest.
